Sunday morning marked the coming together of two beautiful and delicious things: Marla Bakery and State Bird Provisions. Marla is a stellar SF bakery that does all things baked, brined, and pickled, and State Bird Provisions is, well, State Bird Provisions. For the last month, Marla did pop ups in State Bird on the weekends and provided hungry Hayes Valley brunch-goers brunch. But Sunday was Marla’s last days inside State Bird — they’d just landed a permanent brick and mortar space, somewhere to call their home (go Marla!).
We strolled down Fillmore Street and noticed a line outside the grey-painted building. We browsed the sidewalk menu as the smell Marla Bakery’s fresh goodies and Wreckingball Coffee wafted through the open front door. After a short wait, it was delightful to walk through the front doors at State Bird and feel the energetic pulse of the restaurant. The diners were loud and excited to be there, and the mimosas and coffee were flowing freely.
Trays piled high with whimsical baked goodies lined the counters: breads, macaroons, and scones with tiny pots of creme. It was one of those mornings that begged for something a little salty with a strong, strong cup of coffee. You know the kind of morning. Smoked sturgeon with rye toast, 4505 smoked ham and pickled cherries, cherry scone with marscapone, jasmine lemon macaroon and apricot and noyaux soda – That hit the spot. Oh, and the pickled cherries were unlike anything I have ever tasted. Tart, sweet and savory – all at the same time. While I’m going to miss the adventures of Marla pop ups, I can’t wait to see what kind of eclectic touches they add to make a space their own. Get excited and get hungry.
